Some information about Lake Muskry
Lake Muskry is a stunning destination. It is situated 493 meters above sea level, it spans over 20 acres, making it the largest of the five Corrie lakes in the Galtees.
It was formed over 25,000 years ago during the Ice Age, the lake was created when a hollow in the mountains was carved out by a combination of ice and rock.
Massive boulders were pulled from the back wall of the valley and deposited in a semi-circular ridge in front of the lake.
As the ice melted, a conical hollow remained, forming a natural drainage basin.
This basin filled with water to a depth of 105 feet, creating Lake Muskry, with a smaller lake, Farbrega, located just behind it.
The rocks in the area are primarily old Red Sandstone or Conglomerate, and you'll find numerous turf banks, which were commonly used until the late 19th century.
